Greetings Pioneers,
I would like to update our Pioneer community on the lockdown that occured this morning at Dearborn High.
At approximately 9:00a.m. this morning an empty bullet casing was found in a boys restroom at Dearborn High. This was not an actual bullet, only the back half. Police have determined that the casing most likely came from a bullet that would be used in a rifle not a hand gun.
Out of an abundance of caution, Dearborn Police advised that we move our school into a lockdown while a search was conducted. After conducting a thorough search, which included a dog trained in detecting materials associated with weapons, the police determined there was no threat to the building and no additional items were found. We will continue to work with Dearborn Police to identify the person who may have brought this item to school.
During a lockdown students remain in the classroom they are currently in and no one is permitted in or out of the building. When the lockdown was initiated, one of our classrooms made the decision to evacuate the building based on the information they had at that time. This is part of the training that is included in our emergency management plan. Once additional information was provided, the students and teacher returned to the building. Many of you may have seen video footage of this on a local social media platform.
Fortunately this was not a serious incident, no one was harmed, and there was no threat of violence toward our school. However, these types of disruptive events create stress for our staff, students, and parents. We hope that these types of incidents do not occur but when they do we will always take actions that ensure safety for all. I want to thank Dearborn Police for their quick response to ensure the safety of the school. I also want to thank all of our students and staff for following our emergency procedures.
As a strong Pioneer community, we must continue to work together to ensure our school remains a safe place for all.
Thank you,
Zeina Jebril,
Principal, Dearborn High
***Additional Information-
The students who evacuated the school were following directions from the teacher. Again, this is part of our emergency response training that instructs people to make decisions based on the information they have and take the necessary steps to remain safe. Once the teacher was provided with updated information, that the situation was not any type of active threat to safety, the teacher and students returned to the classroom.
