Greetings,
The very tragic and sad events that occured at Oxford High School have deeply affected communities throughout the area. We are all feeling the sadness of this very emotional event. Adding to the level of stress is the unfortunate actions of others looking to take advantage of this situation by creating unnecessary fear and panic by posting or making false threats of violence.
Many schools in southeastern Michigan are experiencing threats posted on social media and/or statements made to someone at school. Statements and threats made towards a school cause a high level of fear for parents, and most importantly, students, regardless of the intention behind the threat; it is this level of fear that disrupts our learning environments and causes undue stress on students, staff, and families.
When we are informed about a possible threat of danger, we must, and we do, take them seriously. We are fortunate to have an outstanding partnership with Chief Haddad and the Dearborn Police Department. We will investigate all claims that we are made aware of in coordination with the Dearborn Police Department. If those threats are deemed credible, we will take the appropriate action. However, if it is found that the person making the comments is doing it as a prank, a joke, or for some other reason, we will also take the appropriate action.
We will work cooperatively with the Dearborn Police and other law enforcement agencies to use every means necessary to locate any individual who makes these types of false claims or unsubstantiated threatening comments. This is no joke! Making these types of comments can result in permanent expulsion from the Dearborn Public Schools and criminal prosecution.
The very best way to keep our schools safe and prevent acts of violence from ever occurring is to build relationships and keep an open line of communication. That is a community wide effort that extends far beyond our classrooms and schools. I want to thank our parents and students for coming forward, stepping up, and sharing information with me and other administrators. Please continue to talk with your child about the importance of sharing information with a trusted adult and being responsible when using social media.
I hope that we can continue to work together to keep our schools safe and provide the very best learning environment for all our students.
