Important Traffic Safety for our Students & Community

Dear Dearborn High Families,

I am writing to provide an important announcement regarding student safety. Following a tragic traffic accident involving a Fordson High School student, new measures are being implemented to ensure the safety of our students and community members.

On December 20, 2024, a 15-year-old Fordson High School student was critically injured while legally crossing Ford Road. The incident, caused by a driver running a red light at high speed, highlights the ongoing need for vigilance and accountability in traffic safety. Our thoughts are with the student and her family during this difficult time, and we wish for her full recovery.

In response, our city and community would like to prevent anything like this from happening in the future. As a result, reckless driving, windshield tints, speeding, etc will be taken seriously, particularly among young drivers. You may have seen Mayor Abdullah Hammoud’s one-minute message

Effective immediately:

  1. Increased Police Presence: The Dearborn Police Department will have a heightened presence around schools, including during dismissal times.
  2. Zero-Tolerance Policy: Student drivers engaging in reckless driving, speeding, or using vehicles with illegal window tints will be issued tickets.
  3. Traffic Studies and Enforcement: Specific intersections, such as Ford and Schaefer Roads, are undergoing assessments to determine additional safety measures.

At Dearborn High School, myself, and our assistant principals are collaborating closely with Officer Hanson, our School Resource Officer, and the Dearborn Police Department, to ensure that these directives are communicated and enforced. We strongly encourage families to have discussions with their teen drivers about responsible driving habits, the dangers of speeding, and the importance of adhering to traffic laws.

Key Safety Reminders for Families:

Reinforce the importance of stopping for pedestrians and obeying traffic signals. Discourage the use of high-horsepower vehicles for young drivers. Address the dangers of dark window tints, which can obscure vision and reduce safety. (Students will be ticketed for these violations).

Our students’ safety is a top priority, and we ask for your partnership in emphasizing the importance of these measures. Let us work together to prevent future tragedies and keep our community safe.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or Officer Hanson directly. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
